UPSF is a non-profit organization legally established in August 2006 under
the laws of the State of MICHIGAN, USA.
It is aimed to meet its vision to see people with polio release their potential
through the process of integration and reintegration. People with polio
should be empowered for their full participation in social, economic and
political spheres of life.
UPSF is planning to operate in Ethiopia in the capital of Addis Ababa, and
in Dire Dawa Administrative Council as well as in four regional states of
the country namely, Amhara , Tigray, Southern Nation and Nationalities,
and Oromia.
According to the World Bank estimates there are 7.5 million persons with
disability in Ethiopia, of whom physical disability and that of polio case is
taking the highest percentage. However, these large segments of the
population are not only excluded from all interactions in the social and
economic networks, but also deprived of their basic human right.
They are alienated from the world of development and are always left
helpless and dependent. There disability is stereotyped in a discriminating
cultural values and end up in to the misinterpretation to be inability.
Therefore, exclusion of persons with disability even from the day today
normal life has become common. Such total segregation results in
marginalizing these people from education, employment, and all other
social and economic advantage/opportunities.
